Folsom City Manager Kerry Miller announced today that Chief Sam Spiegel will retire after serving more than nine years as Folsom’s Police Chief. Spiegel will remain on the job until Miller appoints an Interim Police Chief to serve during the recruitment for a new chief.
“Chief Spiegel’s retirement is certainly a great loss for our organization and for Folsom, and I extend my most sincere thanks and gratitude for his service,” said Miller. “He has helped to cultivate and grow the professional, high-level Folsom Police Department we appreciate and depend on today. Sam brought his talents and energy not only to Folsom, but also to a myriad of regional and state public safety organizations. I know that he will continue to make positive contributions wherever his life takes him from here.”
A 39-year law enforcement veteran, Spiegel is currently the chairman of the Law and Legislative Committee for the California Police Chiefs Association. He also serves as the Governor’s appointee to the State 9-1-1 Advisory Committee and the California Law Enforcement Telecommunication Advisory Committee. He is a past president of the California Peace Officers Association and a former member of the California Homeland Security Public Safety Advisory Council.
“Folsom has been very fortunate to have had Chief Spiegel at the helm of our Police Department for the last nine years. We are grateful for the excellent leadership, skills and work ethic he has brought to our organization and to the city as a whole. Our residents enjoy excellent public safety services. I am deeply appreciative of Sam’s efforts in helping to build Folsom’s outstanding Police Department. We wish him well in his future endeavors and thank him for his excellent service.”

In addition to his role as Folsom’s Police Chief, Sam Spiegel also served the City as Interim Assistant City Manager and Interim City Manager in 2006. He was also an active member of the City’s lobbying team for the Folsom Dam Road and new bridge funding.
“I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to serve the City of Folsom and its residents. I know that the outstanding men and women of the Folsom Police Department will continue to give their all everyday to ensure the high quality of life our residents have grown to expect. Although it is very difficult to leave this organization, I do so with tremendous pride in our accomplishments and confidence in our stellar public safety team.”
