Annual Event Visits Vista Del Lago High School

The phone rings and your son or daughter says “Mom and Dad, I was in an accident. I was drinking. I’m okay, but I don’t think Kelvin is.” The thought of answering such a call is a parent’s worst nightmare. Twenty five Vista Del Lago parents will receive that telephone call tomorrow. One family will learn that their son or daughter was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter.

The Every 15 Minutes program returns to Vista Del Lago High School tomorrow and Thursday through the coordinated efforts of the Folsom Police Department, the Folsom Fire Department, the California Highway Patrol, and the Folsom Cordova Unified School District.

Although it is only a two day event, months of preparation come down to these final two days. Tomorrow 25 parents and an entire school body discover that one of their classmates killed another classmate while driving under the influence of alcohol.

car crashThe dramatization of real life events is an emotional experience for all the student actors involved.

Every 15 Minutes is sponsored by the California Office of Traffic Safety, the involved agencies and the school district.

The event is targeted to high school juniors and seniors, challenging them to think about drinking, driving, personal safety, the responsibility of making mature decisions and the impact their decisions have on family, friends, and many others

Although the event is closed to the public, it represents an opportunity for parents and students to discuss the impact of poor life choices, such as driving under the influence of alcohol. It is illegal for anyone under 21 years of age to operate a motor vehicle or even a bicycle with ANY measurable amount of alcohol in their blood stream.
