When a squirrel decided to jump across a power transformer, it was a really bad decision. Bad for the squirrel. bad for the transformer, bad for residents and bad for the SMUD crews who turned out to fix it.
The transformer exploded in the historic district of Folsom and neighbors said they could hear it almost two blocks away.
Within two hours, SMUD crews were out investigating and replacing the transformer, a few lengths of cable and checking all the poles within three blocks of the failure point. It was hot out there, but they did a great job and had it all wrapped up just after 3pm.
The outage affected 20 homes and power was off for approximately six hours, and on a hot day, that is six hours without air conditioning.
