Folsom, in the Sierra Nevada foothills, began life as Granite City, a small gold mining town. Though few miners became wealthy, the city prospered due to Joseph Folsom's lobbying for a railway connecting the town with Sacramento. The town was renamed to Folsom in his honor after he died in 1855. The railway was abandoned in the 1950's but later opened up as the terminus of the Gold Line of Sacramento Regional Transit District's light rail service. A few former gold-rush era towns are located within city limits of Folsom, including Prairie City, and Mormon Island.
Folsom is most known for its Prison, but with the population heading over 70,000 in 2007, many changes are taking place and Folsom is once again, "the place to be".
