Folsom, Ca – October 19, 2011 beginning at 6 p.m.—Night of 1,000 Pumpkins is a night to remember when hundreds drop off their carved pumpkins in Historic Folsom and it is these pumpkins that line Sutter Street in all their eerie glory! The excitement of this night is heightened by the sheer number of pumpkins, trick or treating at local merchants and Halloween movies ‘under the stars’ suitable for all family members. Bring a chair!

This is definitely ‘family night’ in Folsom. It doesn’t matter how many pumpkins you bring, simply drop them off during the day on Friday, October 28 between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. at the Wool and Sutter Street parking lot. For each carved pumpkin you will be given a raffle ticket for a chance to win some exciting prizes including an iPad donated by MyFolsom.com! Raffle prizes will be drawn between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Wool and Sutter Street parking lot in Historic Folsom. What fun!!

Next, be sure and trick or treat at local merchants between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Afterwards, grab some dinner or get it ‘to-go’ and enjoy while you watch movies under the stars beginning at 6 p.m. in the Wool and Sutter Street parking lot. What a great time for the whole family!

Sutter Street Theatre will have an 8:00pm Special Opening Performance of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. All children will receive Halloween treats. Children in costume will receive half price tickets. Tickets are $17 general, $15 students & seniors, $13 children. Also at 11:45pm is a performance of Evil Dead: The Musical. Recommended for adults and mature teens this show is perfect for the Halloween season.

Stephanie at the Historic District Association says there will be more than 250 classic cars displayed, plus live entertainment on Sutter street. All the blocks in the vicinity of Sutter Street will close beginning at 9 AM.

The event will start once the street is set and ready to go! Stephanie says that could be as early as 11 AM, and the event will continue until 8 PM or 9 PM.

Margery has been singing, acting and performing for the past 10 years in San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York.  She has 50 performances to her credit as well as three films and several commercials.

Don’t miss this very talented singer.

Beginning To See The Light

Although the project is “officially done” to the community, Teichert, the contractor, will still be working on a few loose ends and finishing check off items.  It is possible an area may need to be closed periodically to vehicles, but there should not be any lengthy street closures.

Shannon says there is a landscaper clean up crew, that comes Monday and Friday mornings.  In the interim, merchants helpto pick up any trash that other people leave, to keep everything looking good. Employees and business owners park their vehicles in the parking garage, to leave the short-term spaces in the street for customers making a short stop to pick up goods.

At the Historic Folsom Celebration, visitors who had stayed away all through the construction said they were surprised by how good the street looked, offering congratulations to Folsom. The construction was quite an ordeal, but now, the benefits are a revitalized community and a welcoming area that should pay back dividends for many years.

What to expect this week, May 2- May 6
Concrete will be poured tomorrow on The Folsom Power and Light (Steakhouse building) parking garage, entrance on Scott Street. The lower parking lot on Riley will be open and available. This work should be completed by the end of the day tomorrow.

The 700 block will be closed to vehicle traffic all week so crews can finish facades and landscaping.  All of the current bark will be replaced with a darker bark. While the bark is being changed out in the other blocks, please expect intermittent closures and streets to be open to one way traffic.

The monuments will be set on Wednesday.

Teichert crews install the Folsom Historic District Association banners on Sutter Street. The misc. benches will be installed all week.

The Rediscover Historic Folsom event is set for May 7, and Second Saturday is coming up.

“This is an important day for Folsom as we culminate more than five years of collaboration and a lot of hard work,” says Mayor Andy Morin. “We’ve preserved Sutter Street’s historic character and charming ambience, while enhancing accessibility and amenities.”

The four-hour celebratory event kicks off at 10 a.m. with colorful Chinese Lion Dancers, the Wells Fargo Stagecoach and a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony. Attendees will gather in the 700 block of Sutter Street for a community photo immediately following the ribbon cutting.

Four 9-foot-tall graphic totems depicting different aspects of Folsom’s history will be unveiled. Living History re-enactments and tours will be on-going. Historical photos and vintage cars will be displayed. The James Garner Johnny Cash tribute band will perform on one stage, with more live entertainment on a second stage.

Free shuttle service will be provided between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. from the Walmart parking lot (behind Chevron on Glenn Drive). Attendees may also ride Light Rail to the Historic Folsom Station.

Riley Street from Natoma to Leidesdorff will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to ensure pedestrian safety for those attending the celebration. Drivers are encouraged to take alternate routes such as Folsom Lake Crossing and Lake Natoma Crossing.

The Historic Sutter Street Revitalization Project was a collaborative effort between Historic District merchants and residents, historic preservationists and City officials. The diverse groups reached consensus on a plan to honor the historic nature of the district while increasing its economic vitality.

“An exciting graphics component will highlight the Historic District’s fascinating history,” says City Manager Kerry Miller. “Large graphic totems will feature photos and short stories about the founding of Folsom, the Pony Express, the early days of Sutter Street, and development from the river to residential communities.”

The extensive Revitalization Project began in January 2010 and included the repair of aging water and sewer infrastructure; improved access for people with disabilities; removal of the center medians and creation of on-street parking; widened sidewalks to accommodate shoppers and outdoor dining; construction of new facades and canopies to replace old wooden shed roofs; and the installation of benches, bicycle racks and more than 100 shade trees.

The Revitalization Project was funded with Redevelopment funds received from property taxes generated within the Historic District.

Bobbi Eddy, at “Not Too Shabby” told NewsBlaze “Katrina and I thought we’d make our own sidewalk, and so everyone can come down to see it, I’ve set everything in the store 20% off today, all of Easter is 25% off, & lots of other items up to 50% off – and it’s all on the sidewalk!”

Katrina, on the corner said “The street is looking really nice and now it’s our turn, so we’re celebrating with a 20% off sale, and 10% off textiles.”

Across the road, Anita, the Bag Lady, is joining in too, because she has something else to celebrate as well. It is her one year anniversary on Riley Street – and what a year it has been!

Next week is a HUGE week for this project.  Crews will begin rebuilding Riley Street on Sunday, April 10 through Thursday, April 14.  This will involve closing Riley Street and the Rainbow Bridge 24 hours a day while this work is happening.  Because this closure will be impactful, see this link to review traffic control map. Next week, access to the parking lot below Powerhouse and in front of Clouds will be from Scott Street.  The remaining work on Scott Street is scheduled the week of April 18.

Starting Sunday night, at 8 pm and continuing through Friday, crews will work 24 hours a day to complete all the work left on Wool Street.

Note that there will be no access on Wool from Figueroa to Leidesdorff, excluding the Sutter Street intersection, because the road on Sutter is already completed. Detour routes will be set up throughout the process to allow access into the Historic District via alternative routes such as Decatur, Reading and one way traffic on Sutter Street flowing west to east.

Trader Lane lot access is via Leidesdorff only. Wool lot access will be made available as soon as practical however it will be closed at least Sunday night thru Monday night.

The schedule also shows the last lift of paving on Sutter Street to be installed Thursday, March 31. This work will take all day, from 6 am to 7 pm. Sutter Street from 800 to the 600 block will be closed to vehicle traffic as paving takes place. The work will be completed by the end of the day.

Leidesdorff is also being finished up next week. Intermediate traffic control may be needed.

Work on Riley Street is scheduled to begin April 10 and go through April 14. While this work is happening, Riley will be closed 24 hours a day. Repairs will also be made to Rainbow Bridge so the Rainbow Bridge will also be closed. An extensive signage campaign will direct people during this time.
