150 inmates riot at state prison in Folsom, 2 injured

A riot this morning at one of the two state prisons in Folsom involved about 150 inmates and multiple weapons, officials from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. At least two inmates at California State Prison, Sacramento, were stabbed multiple times and were taken to an outside hospital for treatment, following the riot at about 10 a.m. The severity of their wounds was not immediately available. The riot took place in the exercise yard of B-Facility, a maximum-security unit in the prison, said LeVance Quinn, a spokesman for the CDCR. Various groups were involved, but no specifics were available, Quinn said. Prison staff used rubber bullets and pepper spray as well as one warning shot fired using a lethal round. Injuries are being assessed, but most inmates sustained only minor injuries, officials said. The entire prison is on modified program, or lockdown, while the riot is under investigation. The lockdown will continue in B-Facility until further notice. California State Prison, Sacramento, is in Folsom, but is distinct from Folsom State Prison. It houses about 3,000 inmates, primarily in maximum security for longer sentences. Read more:...

Folsom Picks Sutter Street to view bike race

Folsom’s Historic Sutter Street will be the site of a city-sponsored “viewing party” as the AMGEN Tour of California passes through town May 17. The festivities will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sutter Street near Riley Street. The racers are scheduled to cross Rainbow Bridge, the entrance to the city’s Historic District, about 10:45 a.m. Robert Goss, Folsom’s parks and recreation director, said the Sutter-Riley intersection also is the first designated sprint point for the day, the “Folsom Prison Breakaway Sprint.” The first racer to reach the designated point will receive a $1,000 cash prize donated by local businesses and the Folsom Tourism Bureau. The viewing party will feature a DJ, color commentator, vendors and a drawing for a customized Folsom Prison Breakaway Cruiser donated by Bicycles Plus. The bicycle will come complete with handcuffs, and a ball and chain, Goss said. Proceeds from the drawing will be donated to the Sierra Nevada High School Cycling Organization, supporting student cyclists from Folsom and Vista del Lago high schools and Sutter Middle School, according to a city news release. After leaving the Historic District, Tour of California riders will continue on Riley Street to Blue Ravine Road, Prairie City Road and White Rock Road. The race caravan will include 144 cyclists and 100 vehicles. Cyclists are expected to pass through the 6.25-mile Folsom route in approximately...
